Talks and tours

Attend one of the regular talks organised by the Special Collections, such as the monthly Book Salon and the annual Frederik Muller Lecture.

You can find an overview of coming activities under What’s on

We also organise special talks and guided tours on request.

Book Salons

Since April 2008, the Special Collections have been organising Book Salons. These usually take place on the last Thursday of the month from 17.00 in the Museum Café. Each Book Salon has a different theme. Special guests are invited to discuss a range of subjects with each other and the general public.

Admission to the Book Salons is free, but you must register in advance as space is limited. See What’s on for upcoming Book Salons.

Frederik Muller Lecture

The Frederik Muller Lecture was named after the founder of the Bibliotheek van het Boekenvak (Library of the Book Trade), which is housed in the Special Collections. The lecture is intended to place the University of Amsterdam’s Collections on Book History in a broader perspective.

The Frederik Muller Lecture takes place annually in the Aula of the University of Amsterdam. Free admission.

Summer School

Since 2010, the Research Group for Book Studies and Palaeography and the Special Collections of the University of Amsterdam have been organising a Summer School on the history of the book, which takes place in August each year. The offering of courses, workshops and special events is attractive to anyone who takes an interest in book history: researchers, students, library and museum staff and all other lovers of books and manuscripts, libraries and antiquarian bookshops, printing techniques and typography.

In 2015, the Summer School History of the Book will take place from 17 to 28 August.

Guided tours on request

Guided tours (max. 15 people) take around 1 hour. You can choose between a tour of the building or a tour of the exhibition. Customised guided tours are also possible, please contact us to arrange details.
